XML 2003 and the "code monkey distance from Jim Allchin"

I will be giving a presentation on Yukon's XML features at XML 2003. Feel free to come and check it out. I am still doing the slides, so if there is something you want me to focus on a bit more, please let me know. I am planning on doing lots of demos.

Speaking of doing demos: At PDC, Don Box engaged Jim Allchin as “code monkey”. At Don's XML tutorial at OOPSLA 2003, I had Don as “code monkey” when I gave the XQuery demos. This means that I have a code monkey distance of 1 to Jim Allchin :-). So if I will use a code monkey for my XML 2003 presentation, that person will have the honor of having a short code monkey distance from Jim of 2. :-)

Blogging and community

I have been on the Internet for 20 years (anyone remember BITNET and DECNET etc?). As most C.S. students, I spent way too much time reading and posting to newsgroups during the late 80-ies and early 90-ies. And I have still not fully grown up, given that I blog now. :-)

While blogging is more interactive than non-feedback webpages, it is more of a SOAP-box medium (pun intended) than the best tool for helping people with their issues.

Thus, I would like to point you to the XML community forum on this website and to the SQL Server XML newsgroup that I often monitor. If you have any technical question that you feel others may be interested in, please use the forum and newsgroups and send me a note if you want me to take a look at it. This way, more people can benefit from the answer than if I would answer here with a blog.

Now we get to watch the second part of the extended version of

Live-in contractor...

We are currently remodelling. Installing a couple of new windows, a new tile floor in the entrance hall and a hot water loop. The good news is that the stuff we install is really cool and works. The bad news is that we find other issues that we may have to address in the future (mice in the crawlspace) and that I ordered a wrong sized window even tough I triple-checked the order (but the secretary of the window company crossed the wrong windows for the signing... ahhh). The cost of the windows is not much more, but the window is a foot wider than the current opening, so the contractors will get more money :-).

The windows are however “real” windows that can be tilted. They sport a European hing and tilting mechanism. Check them out!

The hot water loop is nice as well. Especially since we now get hot water in the shower after 2-3s instead of after 1-2 minutes. And if you have easy access through your crawlspace (as we do), it is also a fairly simple installation. First you loop your hotwater line back to cold water intake of the hotwater tank. You install a pump before the intake on the hotwater line (ours is a Grundfos), attach a thermostat onto the waterline and the pump, and install a normal timer on the power-outlet (although you could also attach one to the pump).

Taking a hot shower hasn't been as much fun... :-)
