Take Outs for 19 March 2004

Welcome Home, Marine.

Welcome home, Sgt. Struxness and the rest of the Moonlighters. And thank you, Hollie, for being there for him. Although we've never known each other before tonight, I can say I'm proud of you. You've served your country, the Corp and -- most importantly -- you've come home alive. I thank you for your service to us. I thank you for putting your butt on the line for us, our beliefs and our way of life.

Hopefully the rest our finest can make it back as soon.

School days, part two Blogging Sad but true:  Nowadays, rather than demanding "show me the world and all that is in it, teach me how to learn and how to be an educated, ethical citizen in our complex modern world", students are demanding "give me a piece of paper that will get me a better job than my neighbour, and if you show me anything that offends my narrow view of how the world works, I'll sue."
The XML Files: All About Blogs and RSS Blogging Good read.

Java and .NET forced to divorce Otherwise That's a pretty sad story about Sun's anti-community behavior.
Age of the 64-bit Desktop Otherwise I'm hoping to go there soon. It feels like we'll see the mainstream vendors offering 64-bit systems with the introduction of Longhorn
Defined By Code Otherwise I apologize and admit that this was a sick joke that I shouldn't pull on any human being. If it makes you feel better, I am fat. Not only am I fat, but I am ugly. My looks don't compare to yours. If for some reason this doesn't make you feel better, just remember that you are famous and I am not. Please take pitty on me and don't smite me with your pop-star powers. I humbly beg for your forgiveness.

Keeping a Database in sync SQL Visio can do some differencing. We use it a fair amount as our database modelling tool. That said, SQL Compare does look pretty sweet.
Report rendering engines SQL Reporting Services is essentially a connected-only model.
SQL Reporting services integration with visual studio SQL Funny, I've not had these problems. Left a comment so maybe we can figure this one out.
Reporting Services Myths Debunked SQL
  1. I believe this your right. In the Yukon bits we have today, the Reporting Services bits are much younger than the released bits for production today. I do expect better interoperation when Yukon RTMs -- hopefully seamless.
  2. Yep, seems that too many people don't get that. There's a great white paper out about architecting RS platforms.
  3. Correct.
  4. Its just a matter of writing an RDL file, you can do that with NotePad or an XSLT if you're so brave.
  5. Correct. In fact, if you can connect to a data source using ODBC or OLE DB, you can use it with Reporting Services. You can also write your own data providers if needed.
SQL Server Usergroup Austria - SQL Server Programmability & CLR Integration WILY Sounds like a very good presentation,
System.IO.Compression WILY Oh man, Whidbey is going to rule.
The REAL reason for Whidbey/Yukon delays WILY

It's frickin Visual Studio for petes sake. It's not like people aren't going to buy it. I still don't understand. How is Whidbey's delay increase MICROSOFT's chances of failing? This isn't a rinky-dink development project for a 5-employee client. It's a product central to Microsoft's platform strategy. I'm pretty sure they're going to spend as much time/money/talent as necessary to get it right.

I don't get it either, Robert.

New Book: XQuery: The XML Query Language WILY Bookpool has it for 36% off.

As always: your feedback is welcome below as a comment.
