Take Outs for 18 March 2004

Those who don't learn from history...

...must work in IT. We had to have a hurry-hurry panic-panic meeting today because one of our developer servers is coming off of lease. Fine. Operations and Tech Services may have told about it 90-days ago. But now, its due back or we have to keep paying for it. The only thing that sucks is that it has about 200 web sites on it. Now if was just a mater of copying a config file around, that wouldn't suck so bad. But, its IIS, so the metabase is kind bound up if you know what I mean.

Not sure who -- probably my Evil Twin Brother Tony -- suggested that we could just use VMWare server. Great idea, but isn't this revisitng the bad old days of mainframes? I mean, why did the PC revolution work so well for so long but now we're going back to that architecture?

If it didn't make such sense in this case, I'd have to say "no, bad administrators, back into your cages." But it does.

Anybody got a VT220 to spare?

I'm also of the opinion that Linux is good for the industry because it creates competitive pressures. That's good for Microsoft because it keeps them innovative. (Just don't tell the F/OSS communities that they are really doing MS that favor...)
