Take Outs for 16 March

Dinner with Lumpy, Poem from Ted.

Had "curmidgeony geek" dinner with Lumry (aka Lumpy) from our Seattle office tonight at EspaƱa. We mostly talked about ProjectWise, where we see HDR going and our on-going health sagas. Its good to connect again with a kindred spirit who shares my belief that we're all doomed. Doomed, doomed, doomed.

It snowed all day again here. Made me think of this poem, by Ted Kooser, entitled march 16 from Winter Morning Walks.

Snow melting from the roof.

Spring, the sky rippled with greese,
but the green comes on slowly,
timed to the ticking of downspouts.
The pond, still numb from months
of ice, reflects just one enthusiast
this morning, a budding maple
whose every twig is strung with beads
of carved cinnabar, bittersweet red.

It's gotta be the wine talkin'...

Fawcette and other TechPubs: The writing is on the wall Blogging What I appreciate most about this one is that its not just lamenting, Jason offers ideas.
Stale Page RSS Feed Blogging I so love the idea of "RSS the deltas." Tell what documents have changed, what changed and why. That's useful knowledge, somethimes.
Fawcette and other TechPubs: The writing is on the wall Blogging Actually, I don't mind writing for free. If I do enough of that, maybe I'll finally get better and people won't mind parting with their bucks for my books.
Wow - We've Been Taken Out! Blogging More humbly, I really want to thank all of you for giving me so much food for thought. That's honor too.
I have been "Taken Out" few times now Blogging

Wow! Twice in one day. You know, I didn't start Take Outs to be the next Scoblizer. This is just really my breadcrumbs. I'm glad folks like it and hopefully, find it useful too. Maybe my moto should be "Its just like Getting Scoblized without all the annoying referred traffic..."

Volunteers Sought for Philadelphia SQL Server Users Group Committee Blogging Well, I might be tempted into presenting if you'd have me/
Centrall IL Dot Net User Group - Upcomming Events Blogging Same offer. I know Matt reads Take Outs. Since I've offered to pay a visit to Adam's .NET UG, maybe I could visit Bloomington too.
Right...gonna get back to this...and a request for assistance! Blogging but I am no writer and English is not my first language (I'm Scottish :-)).
Competitor to CF on the horizon. Dev Worth watching to see if pans out.
.NET - You dun love me anymore? Dev And I thought I had a bad day. Sometimes love is just tough love, I guess.
Misunderstanding XML and Other RSS Follies Dev Is it just me or is Dare's writing style changing into a more something more caustic. That's a shame because I think he's really good at this stuff, but I as I read this, I kind of felt sorry for Arve like Dare was dressing him down in public. That said, that's probably far from Dare's intention and I may be making a mountain from a molehill here.
An open letter to Jakob Nielsen Dev On the other hand, this definetly seems like making a moutain out of molehill and a lot of reading what you want to into somebody elses words.
Microsoft releases new tool to monitor network ports Dev Yes, its cool, but my question is: why has it taken so long to for a.) people to realize they should have a tool like this and b.) for Microsoft to put one out.
Tim Bray on challenges facing the CLR Dev I totally agree with Dominic here.
Exploring Naked Objects Dev This is classic Dare writing. I like both what he said and how he said it here. That said, I'm not a big fan of Naked Objects.
Dumb Idea or Good Idea? Dev I think they are both right: Good examples are smart, bad applications are dumb. If you expect to get working solutions out of this kind of thing then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Use it as an opportunity to read good source code.
Some links I need to remember Dev Fiddler looks cool.
Neat Query control on CodeProject Dev Other than SQL Injection vectors, this does look interesting.
To optimize or not to Optimize? Dev Seems to be the best place to optimize in the source code. Now mater how performant the compilers are. If there are tricks to be learned in making better source in light of the light-optimization done by the current C# compilers, that's where the enegry should be.
Word 2003 Sample: Creating a Custom Spell Checker with Word 2003 and Visual Basic .NET Dev Spiffy.
XML Bestiary: IndexingXPathNavigator Dev Definitely recommended reading.
Is ASP.NET Too Hard? Dev If your IQ is less than your shoe size, then maybe. Otherwise, no! But you can't just assume its going to be as easy. You've have to make the effort to learn how it works to use it in such a way that it is easier. Mr. Likes makes an excellent point in the comments.
