Take Outs: The Digital Doggy Bag of Blog Bits for 16 February 2004

During our monthly security patch meeting, a rather chilling topic came up: what is the recent leak of the Windows source code was intentional? I mean, think about it: what's been leaked isn't exactly the current cash cow. Personally, I have a hard time with either of this arguments. If MS was going to try a stunt like this, I'd certainly expect it much closer to a product launch where it would make "impulse upgrading" easier. Or, what if the leak was help find errors in the code basis that Microsoft itself wasn't finding? That would be admitting that "Open Source" -- in the sense of public code inspections -- really is a better model for developing secured products. While I think Microsoft being more willing to allow this kind of inspection to occur would be a good thing in total, I wouldn't want just anybody doing it either. So no, I really don't believe that "Leakgate" is anything more than somebody taking illegal and immoral advantage of an opportunity.

I've been having what, for me anyway, its a good thread running on the "Wisdom from Rod" posting. I'd really like to thank Luke and Fred for their contributions to it. I'd also like to thank Fred for asking questions about my WILY presentation and specifically about the ASMX vs. Remoting direction in Indigo. I'll make sure to post whatever new threads I find about in Take Outs. I also need to thank Julia Lerhman for pointing out that I didn't completely read her posting about the Whidbey beta dates. DOH!

The final thought for tonight is that I'm basically pretty darned pleased with .Text as a Blogging engine. With a little Zenslap from Donny Mack, I got it up and going today. One thing I'd like to see more of, of course, is documentation for the Wiki impaired. I'll publicly state that I think .Text handbook on my bookshelf would be a very welcomed addition.

Let's Roll...
