ASP.NET 101: ViewState and Events

GRRRRRRRRR! (Don't worry, that's self-directed...)

ASP.NET 101: If you disable the ViewState of a Page, a DataGrid on that Page won't raise certain events as events, especially OnSelectedItemIndexChange. If you need that event, enable ViewState.

Problem: That's second time in the last couple of years I've made that mistake, each time taking more than time that it should have to track it down. Hopefully its now burned into my FleshPROMs.

After rant mint:

If you're looking for a fair-priced, feature rich and reliable FTP stack for .NET (before Whidbey), take a look at Rebex's product. I've been using it as a last and am rather pleased with it so far.

Express Lane to Bummersville

When will I learn? Backup before, no need to restore; no backup before, prepare for a chore...

Issues encountered so far with the Express products:

  1. SQL Server 2005 Express, launch the installer, wait impatiently, generate a Win32 Exception. Reboot, try again. Doh! I'm zero for one.
  2. Visual Web Developer 2005 express. Install product+doc+SQL. Product installs, not sure about the doc, get another error message, but the install process reports success. Guessing that its not smart enough to catch a failed SS2K5E install. I'm 2 for 4.
  3. Resume working with VSN2K3. That's funny, my project isn't autowiring events? The debugger isn't entering code it should? Compiled files look to be caching incorrectly? FrontPage publishing isn't working? OV YEH! I'm 2 for 8.

Looks like I'll be reinstalling from the group up. I'm okay with that actually: there's lots of leftover beta bits that I can't guarantee I've completely scrubbed off the machine and I want to really start pounding on XP SP2 again.

I just hope I'll be telling myself that at 3AM Wednesday morning...

Three words on "Expresses," more or less

So, the express products are real... You can download 'em today

  1. Wow!
  2. Finally!
  3. HurryUpAndGetTheRTMsOutTheDangDoor!

And let's not forget that the heavyweight versions of SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 should be available real soon now.

There is something I want to alert you to: SQL Server 2005 Express is not exactly Beta2. That's okay -- its forward progress.

More details as I can work them out.
