Beer notes: oh, I'm going to hate myself in the morning

Lady J (no, not the the GI Joe, rather Janell) went out on the town this evening and found ourselves at our favorite ale house. The steaks were ok, but the beer was mostly excellent

  • Empryean Celtic Ale: Not one of the best efforts from that brewery. Ok, but one was plenty for tonight.
  • Spilker Spring O'Peel: Bording on insipid at first, but settled down to being rather tastey.
  • New Beligum 1554: Yum. Even better on tap.
  • Sierra Nevada Brown Ale: good, but a bit to hoppy and not quite malty enough for our tastes.
  • Pyramid Apricot Ale: Funny that for once, Janell was drinking the fruit beer. I understand that though, this is wonderful on tap
  • My favorite brew of the evening was Spilker's Hopalluia which is really odd since Janell is much more of the "big beer" fan than I am.

Water, asprin and a B12 tab. I'll be fine in the morning, right?

New Toy: Sony DSC-P32

Sticker shock city: I was all set to shell out $200 to upgrade my Verzion wireless phone to one that would snap pictures. Oh, no, of course not. Since I'm already a suckercustomer, it would be $370. Minimum. Little wonder why there is such churn in the wireless market. Still, I wanted a little camera for fun, since Janell has the big sexy Camera from heck.

The easy choice for me was the Sony DSC-P32. Got it for a fair price and also snapped up a 64mb memory stick. One of the big reasons I opted for this camera (other than the price) was that it can snap up to 3.2-megapixel images down to some called email resolution. Janell and I can also share our media and our media readers. So far, I'm a pretty pleased customer. Here's some of the initial VGA mode pictures.

Some call it the Geek-mobile, I like to think of it as the bitch'n Echo.

Take Outs: comments, comments and comments on comments.

For the second time in as many days I've gotten some negative feedback about the comments generated by Take Outs. Here's the latest:

Sorry, but when you are posting those 'You have been Taken Out -- see comments in the linked document. Thanks for the post!' messages to almost every blog i read already, it's rather annoying, especially thinking that if everyone else would also be 'taking out' their favorite posts. So lets suppose this 'good idea' spreads, there will be a flood of those useless comments.

It would be fine by me if it was supported in some standard fashion, so that your-favourite-reader would be able to just make these 'take out' comments disappear. Linked comments are good idea, but how would you feel if you write some article, and then there was a 50 links to comments located in commentors web page, and half of the comments would be "great post". This is unacceptable until it's better supported by readers and standards.

I'm not sure whats more useless: my links or comments like this one. Why?

I'll start by being self-critical first. The reason I started adding the comment was to see if added traffic back through to the underlying posting (on the SQLJunkies) site. Statistically, I'm finding that it doesn't really make any difference. So then I'm forced to evaluate if dealing with like this is worth expending my time an energy on. That's easy. I deal with enough self-absorbed people real-world problems that its just not worth it. So for that reason and that reason only, I'm going to stop adding the extra text.

I agree with you about one thing: I'd really like there to be a better way to do commenting like this. Maybe the folks on the IETF on RSS will read this and agree.

When somebody takes the time get give their feedback, I really want to take the time to stop, listen and learn. Everybody can teach me something. To not do so is a foolish waste of an opportunity to grow. I've gotten some harsh criticism in the comments in this blog and I've not removed it. Why? Because those people, in my mind, that something to contribute to my life and the community as a whole. Something we all could benefit from.

I'd especially like to thank Michael Flanakin for the way he provided his similar feedback. He earned my respect by putting such comments in his own blog. We chatted about it too. He's somebody that's helped make my world better.

Sorry -- whoever you are -- your comment just doesn't carry that weight, so I've removed it. You're welcome to your opinion about whats unacceptable. Just like that, I feel that comments like this are just as unacceptable, annoying and useless. That's why been removed.

Now, please, go troll someplace else.

BOB'04: The sweet 16?

So, we are down to the round of 16. I'm not doing to well with my predictions, so let's see if I can't improve in this round.

  • Grant's Mandarin vs. Alaskan Smoked Porter: Alaskan, duh. How Madarin got around Abbey befuddles me.
  • Black Watch vs. Brutal Bitter: Given that Brutal Bitter has been winning easily, I'm now resigned to that beer winning in this round.
  • Downtown Brown vs. Old Rasputin: Old Rasputin seems like the obvious choice here.
  • Racer 5 vs. Arrogant Bastard Ale: While I'd like to see Racer 5 win, I just can't see that happening.
  • Otter Creek Copper Ale vs. Flying Fish Abbey: I'll stick with the fish.
  • Black Chocolate vs. 90 Minute IPA: And what lovely parting gift do we have for the Brooklyn Brewing company?
  • Edmund Fitzgerald vs. 3 Floyds Dreadnaught: GLB should shipwreck the Dreadnaught.
  • Raspberry Tart vs. Celis White: Go new Glarus go. Shame on me for not giving you more of a chance to begin with!
