More on "The Rational Guide to: SQL Server Reporting Services"
I had an email conversation with Anthony Mann about this book. He had some feedback about my comments about this book. While he had some valid points, I still feel my comments were both appropriate and applicable. He also asked me to take a look at the three free programs you can download from publisher's web site. So I did.
- I first looked at the tool that allows you to browse the log files keep by the Reporting Service with Internet Explorer. That's helpful if you don't want to take the effort to write your own.
- Next, I looked at the Image Manager. This is helpful if you need to insert an image -- in binary form -- into a table. It did take a little bit of tweaking to get this program to working with the NorthWinds database and likely would take a view similar tweaks to work with your database.
- The last program is essentially a demo of how to pro grammatically work with the Reporting Services over SOAP. Again, it will take a bit of tweaking to get working on your system.
If you're thinking about buying this book already, these are good bonuses. If you're not but you want some reasonable examples of programming against the Reporting Service, here's a good reason to do so.
