Take Outs: The Digital Doggy Bag of Blog Bits for 15 February 2004

Hangovers are easily avoided if you don't drink (duh) or if you take a big dose of vitamin B-12 and a large drink of water before going to sleep. I'm paying for not doing any of those this morning. Still, it was well worth it.

If you still don't believe me that Microsoft really does listen to us in Blogspace, I've gotten two comments back from KC about Outlook and Exchange -- topics that I hardly ever post much about. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

In my last post, I listed two books I felt like buying last night. I felt like getting copy of "The Pragmatic Programmer" today, too.

Item Category RSS Comments
Accumulated links Blogging RSS Follow the PowerPoint link.
Enjoy Every Sandwich Blogging RSS *Blush*
The Daily Grind 299 Blogging RSS Lots of good links here. Mike does a good job finding some really interesting stuff.
Auto-Updating Cache Entries Dev RSS It's a nice idea, let's hope it takes off.
ContextMenu - code complete! Dev RSS Now that's slick and I like the usability of it.
If you could do it over again... Dev RSS I recommend using virtual servers, myself.
Integrating WinForms with VB6 Dev RSS Pushing a Water Mellon through a Garden Hose works too.
My Kind of Warranty Dev RSS I like it too.
Ngen should be the default Dev RSS In practice yes, in theory no. I like the idea of being able to have my bits run anywhere. Same reason I don't like the idea of a linker too much either.
Chronicle 1 - "The Journey Begins" Rants RSS One, you have to start somewhere and two, it's never to early to expose kids to anything, I think.
How To Ace An Interview Part I (by: aegix) Rants RSS There's a gem in this: "The rule of interviewing is to take your time answering questions. You usually don't get dinged for pausing a moment to reflect on a question and thinking of a good answer."
Life, Marriage, and Illness Rants RSS "You should be free to define the relationships in ways that make you comfortable, not in ways that make the state or crabby old people comfortable." Well said.
Windows XP and ClearType Rants RSS I use ClearType everywhere, actually, so I found this to be a neat trick.
Accessing a Report Server Using a URL POST Request RS RSS It's a great article and is worthy of praise for demonstrating the right way to do this (via POST) and than the insecure way (GET.)
Hands-On Lab: SQL Server Reporting Services RS RSS Two good RS links in one.
Joe Celko on representing trees in SQL using the nested set model SQL RSS It is an interesting approach to the problem.
New SQL Server Freeware Tool - TOAD for SQL Server SQL RSS TOAD was a complete life safer for me when working with PeopleSoft on Oracle, so its nice to see this port.
Optimizing Database Queries SQL RSS Pretty good discussion here. Yukon's query analyzer has even more showplan features.
Cooking with the Klingons: Antarian Glow Water WTF? RSS Gagh made with Udon? What's next, Prune juice Spritzers?
Fun Fact Of The Day WTF? RSS So long as they don't own Scooters, I'm fine with that.
Intranets take second place to public internet WTF? RSS Intranets should only be expected to provide business-specific applications of knowledge at best. More generalized content really does belong on a world-facing site.
The Gay2K Bug WFT? RSS Yes, making assumptions leads to having to potentially rework things. Not making some assumptions like pairing leads to a slippery slope of programming complexity. Good point about sanity tests.
The government is not trustworthy for people's privacy? WFT? RSS So, we trust the folks who take the most from us and trust our guardians the least? How F'ed is that?
Yukon Quest Has Started! WTF? RSS Heh, I got tricked into this one.
ASP.NET Precompilation in Whidbey WILY RSS Yes, its an excellent feature. That said, it would be nice to all the tricks that folks are doing with NGEN be re-applied here.
Indigo Migration Questions Answered! WILY RSS Well, I wonder if trying it out for yourself and making some of your own decision isn't part of the reason they gave us the bits this early. :)
Longhorn's leaky sidebar WILY RSS It is a pre-alpha software, after all.
WinFS discussion WILY RSS I think the point is to be able to "put" on thing into every "folder" where you think its appropriate. Or am I missing something yet again?
Authors Posting Reviews: Tsk, Tsk, Tsk Writing RSS Sad, yes, but what's even worse is when an author (ab)uses Amazon to send you 10% coupons for their just released works. GEESH.
Davisor Offisor 1.5.1 XML RSS As opposed to File|Save As|Xml..., right?
Developing a seminar, XML RSS I can't help him, but maybe you can.
Warriors of Streaming XPath Order XML RSS More on XSEReader. This is a pretty interesting thread to watch, I think.
Xen - Wow XML RSS Precisely why Xen is NOT the next C#. GEESH!

As always: your feedback is welcome below. Thanks, and Enjoy Every Sandwich.
